Safari bookmarks disappeared on iPhone? How to get them back

If your Safari bookmarks vanished from your iPhone, they are often not gone: Safari may be switched off in iCloud, you may be looking at a different folder, or a sync went wrong. If they really were deleted, Apple lets you restore an earlier copy from iCloud.com.

Below, in order: quick checks, restoring from iCloud, what to do if that fails, and how to keep your own copy of the links that matter. Linkeeper is an iPhone and iPad app that saves links; it is not a fix for Safari and cannot recover bookmarks you never saved in it. Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions.

What should I check first?

  1. 1In Safari, tap the bookmarks icon (the open book) and look at the top-left: you may be inside a subfolder. Tap the arrow to go back to the top level, and check Favorites too.
  2. 2Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. Find Safari (tap See All if it is not listed) and make sure it is on.
  3. 3If it is on and bookmarks are still missing, turn Safari off, wait a minute, and turn it on again. If iOS asks what to do with the bookmarks on the phone, choose to keep them.
  4. 4Check your internet connection and give Safari a few minutes to sync, then force-quit and reopen it.
  5. 5Compare with another device signed in to the same Apple Account: if the bookmarks are there, the problem is sync on this phone, not deletion.

If you recently changed Apple Account or turned Safari off in iCloud, the bookmarks may live under the old setting. Switching Safari off can offer to remove iCloud-synced bookmarks from the phone, so read that prompt before tapping.

How do I restore Safari bookmarks from iCloud?

iCloud keeps earlier versions of your bookmarks, but only if Safari was on in iCloud when they were archived.

  1. 1On a computer or in a browser, go to icloud.com/recovery and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. 2Choose Restore Bookmarks.
  3. 3Pick the version from before the bookmarks disappeared and choose Restore next to it.
  4. 4Do not edit bookmarks on any device until it finishes. The restored set then syncs to every device with Safari on in iCloud.

Apple archives your current bookmarks before the swap, so you can go back to them from the same screen. If the list is empty, Safari was probably never on in iCloud and there is nothing to restore.

What if the bookmark is still in my History?

Open Safari's History (the clock tab in the bookmarks view), search by the page title, open the page, tap Share, then Add Bookmark. That recovers one link at a time and only works for pages visited recently enough to still be in History.

What if there is no iCloud copy?

Two last options. If you made a computer or iCloud backup of the iPhone before the loss, restoring the whole phone from it brings back that day's bookmarks, but it also rolls back everything else on the phone, so treat it as a last resort. Otherwise, rebuild from sources you still have: a Mac or iPad with Safari on, another browser, or an HTML export you made earlier.

Paid recovery tools advertise bookmark scanning; this guide cannot vouch for them, and they cannot restore what iCloud never archived.

How do I keep my own copy so this cannot happen again?

Sync is not a backup: a deletion syncs to every device just as fast as an addition. Keep one copy outside Safari for the links you cannot afford to lose.

  • On a Mac, choose File → Export → Bookmarks in Safari. You get one HTML file; save it with a date in the name. Other browsers have the same kind of export, see moving bookmarks between browsers and iPhone.
  • Put the important links in an app that keeps its own copy. In Linkeeper, Settings → Backup & restore → Export file writes your whole library, tags included, to a JSON file you can save to Files or iCloud Drive. It works without an account, and Restore adds missing links without overwriting existing ones.
  • Before you switch phones, follow the bookmark backup checklist.

How do I move my Safari bookmarks into Linkeeper?

  1. 1On a Mac, export from Safari with File → Export → Bookmarks and save the HTML file to iCloud Drive so your iPhone can reach it.
  2. 2In Linkeeper, go to Settings → Library → Import from other apps and choose the file.
  3. 3Review the preview, which shows new links and skips ones already in your library, and tap import. Folders can become tags.
  4. 4If the result is not what you wanted, Undo import removes exactly the links that import created.

The file is read on your iPhone and is not uploaded. Linkeeper cannot read Safari's bookmarks directly from the iPhone; it needs the exported file. Once imported, links are searchable by title and tag. See also Linkeeper and Safari Reading List if you use Reading List too.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my Safari bookmarks disappear on iPhone?
Common causes are Safari switched off in iCloud, a sync problem, looking in the wrong folder, or deleting a bookmark or folder, which then syncs to all devices.
Can I restore deleted Safari bookmarks?
Often yes, from icloud.com/recovery → Restore Bookmarks, if Safari was on in iCloud when the earlier version was archived.
Are Safari bookmarks stored on the iPhone or in iCloud?
Both, when Safari is on in iCloud: each device keeps a copy and changes sync between them. With Safari off in iCloud, they stay on that device only.
How do I back up Safari bookmarks?
On a Mac, use File → Export → Bookmarks in Safari to save an HTML file. On the iPhone itself, keep important links in an app with its own export, such as Linkeeper's Backup & restore.
