How to find links in iMessage chats on iPhone (and keep them)
Published · 6 min read

To find a link someone sent you in Messages, open the conversation, tap the name or photo at the top, and scroll down to the Links section in the details screen. Tap See All to list every link in that chat, so you do not have to scroll back through months of texts.
This guide covers that list, the search that looks across all your conversations, the Shared with You row in Safari, why a link sometimes cannot be found, and how to keep the few links that matter in a library you control. Menus are described as of writing and can differ between iOS versions, so if yours looks different, check Apple's guide for your version.
Where does Messages list the links from a conversation?
Each conversation has a details screen that gathers its photos, links, locations and documents in one place. Links are shown with their page title and a preview when one is available.
- 1Open the conversation in Messages.
- 2Tap the contact's name or photo at the top of the screen to open the details.
- 3Scroll down past the photos until you reach the Links section.
- 4Tap See All to list them, then tap a link to open it.
This works for iMessage and for regular text messages alike. If you cannot see a Links section, the conversation may simply not contain any link that Messages recognised, or your iOS version may label it differently.
How do I search for a link I only half remember?
Messages searches across all conversations from the search field at the top of the conversation list. It looks at message text, so the words around the link are often the best clue: the sender's name, the topic, the name of the website.
- 1Go back to the main list of conversations and pull down or tap the search field.
- 2Type a word you remember from the message, the person's name, or the site's name, for example the part of the address after www.
- 3In newer iOS versions the results are grouped, and you can tap See All for the group of links. You may also see filters such as links; which ones appear depends on your iOS version.
- 4Tap a result to jump to the message it came from.
What is Shared with You, and does it replace saving?
Shared with You is an iOS feature that surfaces content people send you in Messages inside the apps where it belongs. For links, they appear on Safari's start page below Suggestions; open a new tab to see them. Tapping the button under a link preview takes you back to the conversation where it was sent.
Two conditions apply: Shared with You must be turned on for Safari in the Messages settings (the path has moved between iOS versions, so search Settings for “Shared with You”), and the sender usually needs to be in your contacts. It is a convenient reminder, not a library: items come and go, you cannot add notes or tags, and they depend on the messages still being there.
Why can't I find a link someone sent me in Messages?
- Messages may be set to delete old conversations. In the Messages settings, Keep Messages can be 30 days, 1 year or forever; once a message is deleted it no longer appears in any search.
- You or the sender deleted the message or the whole conversation.
- The link was sent in another app, such as WhatsApp or Instagram, so it is not in Messages at all.
- Search results can lag on a very large history, or be affected by settings that hide Messages from search. Updating iOS and checking that Messages is allowed to show in search can help.
- The sender is not in your contacts, so it does not show in Shared with You even though it is in the chat.
The common thread: a link lives only as long as the message that carried it. If you will want it next month, copy it out now.
How do I keep a link from Messages in Linkeeper?
Linkeeper is an iPhone and iPad app for saving links and reading them later. It keeps links on your device, in a library you can search by title, tag, note or saved text, and it does not need an account.
- 1In Messages, touch and hold the link and tap Copy. (The same menu usually offers Share too.)
- 2Open Linkeeper and tap + in the Library header to open the add screen.
- 3Tap Save copied link. Linkeeper reads the clipboard only when you tap, shows a preview, and tells you if that link is already in your library. iOS may ask you to allow pasting.
- 4Add a short note, such as who sent it or why you want it, then save. Tags and collections can be added later.
If you open the link in Safari first, you can use the Share button there and choose Linkeeper, which saves it without opening the app. If Linkeeper is not in the share row, add it to the share sheet first.
Later, search a word from the title, your note or the article itself, even without a connection. To find things again in a growing list, see how to find a saved link on iPhone.
Which method should I use?
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| A link in one conversation you will revisit soon | The Links section in the conversation details |
| You remember a word but not the chat | Search from the conversation list |
| A reminder of links friends sent this week | Shared with You in Safari |
| A link you want to read later, tag and search | Copy it and save it in Linkeeper |

Frequently asked questions
- How do I see all the links in an iMessage conversation?
- Open the conversation, tap the name or photo at the top, scroll to the Links section and tap See All. Labels can vary slightly between iOS versions.
- How do I search for a link in Messages?
- Use the search field at the top of the conversation list and type a word from the message, the sender's name or the website's name. Newer iOS versions group results and let you tap See All for links.
- Why can't I find a link someone texted me?
- The message may have been deleted, Messages may be set to remove old messages, the link may have been sent in another app, or search may be affected by your settings. Try a word from the surrounding text and check Keep Messages in the Messages settings.
- What is Shared with You in Safari?
- An iOS feature that shows links people sent you in Messages on Safari's start page. It needs Shared with You turned on and, usually, the sender in your contacts. It is a reminder, not a place to organise links.
- How do I keep an important link from Messages?
- Touch and hold the link, tap Copy, then in Linkeeper tap + and Save copied link. It is stored on your device with a preview and an optional note, and you can search it later.
- Does Linkeeper read my messages?
- No. Linkeeper never connects to Messages. You copy a link yourself and save it; it reads the clipboard only when you tap Save copied link.
