How to find a link you copied on iPhone (there is no clipboard history)

Guide cover: “How to find a link you copied on iPhone (there is no clipboard history)” beside a Linkeeper screenshot of a saved-links library

You copied a link, copied something else, and now the link is gone. The iPhone clipboard keeps only the most recent thing you copied, and as far as Apple documents, iOS has no built-in screen that lists earlier copies. Some websites claim a hidden clipboard viewer in Settings; this guide does not rely on one, so check your own Settings if you want to look.

Below: what you can still recover, how to check what is on the clipboard right now, and how to stop losing links by saving them as you copy them. Linkeeper is an iPhone and iPad app that saves links; it does not record your clipboard in the background.

Can I see my clipboard history on iPhone?

Not as a list. Each new copy replaces the previous one, so an older link is overwritten and cannot be pulled back from the clipboard. A third-party clipboard-manager app or keyboard can keep a history, but only from the moment you install it, and it cannot show copies made before that.

How do I see what I copied most recently?

  1. 1Open Notes, or any text field.
  2. 2Touch and hold in an empty spot, then tap Paste.
  3. 3If iOS asks whether to allow pasting from another app, allow it for this one paste.

If nothing appears, the clipboard is empty or holds something that is not text, such as an image. Copying on an iPhone and pasting on a Mac can also work through Apple's Universal Clipboard, but only when both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account with Handoff on, and it still holds just one item.

I copied a link and lost it. Where can I still find it?

The clipboard cannot help, but the place you copied it from usually can:

  • Safari: open the History list (the book icon in the bookmarks view) and look for the page by title.
  • Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram: search the chat for the site name, or open the chat's links list. See how to find links in iMessage chats and in WhatsApp.
  • Social apps: check the app's own saved or history list, for example saved posts on Reddit.
  • A search engine: type the words you remember from the page.

For the general case, see how to find a saved link on iPhone.

How do I stop losing links I copy?

Do not leave a link on the clipboard as a to-do list. Put it somewhere that keeps it before you copy anything else. Three options, from simplest to most organized:

  • Paste it into Notes. Quick, but links pile up in one long note; see Apple Notes vs Linkeeper.
  • Use the share sheet instead of copying. The Share button in an app can send the link straight to a link-saving app, so nothing sits on the clipboard.
  • Save it in a link library you can search later.

How do I save a copied link in Linkeeper?

  1. 1Copy the link in any app.
  2. 2Open Linkeeper and tap + in the Library header to open the add screen.
  3. 3When Linkeeper sees that the clipboard holds a link, a card appears saying You copied a link. Tap Save copied link.
  4. 4iOS may ask you to allow pasting. Linkeeper reads the clipboard only when you tap the button; just checking whether a link is there does not read its contents.
  5. 5If the link is already in your library, Linkeeper tells you and offers to open it instead of saving a duplicate.

If you would rather not copy at all, add Linkeeper to the share sheet and save from the Share button in one tap. Your links stay on your device and need no account.

Limitation: Linkeeper reads the title and thumbnail from the page, and some pages give little. Add a one-line note if the card looks bare.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone have a clipboard history?
Not that Apple documents. It keeps only the latest item you copied, and each new copy replaces it. Third-party keyboard and clipboard apps can keep a history from the time you install them.
How can I check what is on my iPhone clipboard?
Paste it into Notes or any text field. iOS may ask you to allow the paste.
Can I recover a link I copied earlier?
Not from the clipboard. Look in the app you copied it from, such as Safari History or the chat's search, or search for words from the page.
Does Linkeeper keep a history of what I copy?
No. It reads the clipboard only when you tap Save copied link, and checking whether a link is present does not read the contents.
